Our R1200RT...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

We collected our new bike on Friday 15 April 2005.                 New Scoop shots of the R1200RT-P police spec bike.

Compared to the old R1150RT, this is miles better. On the ride to Rainbow on the 1150 I commented to Kathy how crap the std screen was, as I had sold the Airflow wider + taller screen. I just missed the Airflow screen so much. Now the screen on the R1200RT is so much like the Airflow Screen, even keeps the wind off my wide shoulders, great.
Smooth, well it certainly is. Used correctly the engine and box snick together so well, get ratty with the fast stick and you can get the odd crunch.
The pick up is awesome, pulls cleanly right to the naughty area, and again it is so smooth. I like it though as you can still feel that it is a twin. It is so nimble and hides it weight so much better than the 1150. The steering is so much sharper and it turns in a lot quicker.  Front brakes are not as sharp as the 1150, but they have good feel, and the rear unlinked brake makes a welcome return. The seat was real comfy as well, this coming from a Corbin man. We did around 250 miles and I felt fine.
 All in all, excellent package

The details of the new motor

BMW have tweaked the motor to produce 110 BHP at 7600 rpm Max torque of a healthy 115 Nm is produced at 6000 rpm. The engine produces more torque and power than the R1200GS, by a 500 rpm increase in engine speed, a different intake system, new silencer and modified cams, and an increase in the compression ratio to 12:1 by the use of higher pistons.  The BMS-K electronic engine management features anti-knock control and separate oxygen sensors that control the fuel/air mixture to each cylinder individually, so no more surging. This system also incorporates automatic idle speed control with an automatic cold start function. The anti-knock function allows the engine to run on lower grades down to 95 RON (85 USA), for full power the engine needs to be run on 98 RON (92 USA) fuel.

Fuel consumption is up from the R1150RT which managed and impressive 51.4 mpg imp. The R1200RT manages 58.8 mpg imp.
